The advances in antiretroviral therapy have contributed to the prolonged lifespan of people living with HIV. However, living and ageing with HIV differs from ageing while HIV-negative. It is associated with numerous challenges that arise from the biological intersection of ageing and HIV. Older people living with HIV are frequently experiencing multiple chronic health conditions, coping with frailty, disability and/or cognitive changes, living in social isolation, in addition to facing HIV-related stigma and discrimination. Ageing and older people living with HIV should be supported in their HIV and ageing journey, with HIV remaining an important determinant in both general medicine and geriatric care and treatment.
This series of webinars aims to call attention to the key considerations of the Glasgow Manifesto developed by the International Coalition of Older People Living with HIV (iCOPe HIV). The webinars will inter alia focus on the issues of healthy ageing and self-management, quality of care for ageing and older people with HIV, and ageing in women living with HIV.

Our upcoming webinar, exclusively dedicated to women ageing with HIV, will delve into the unique experiences they encounter throughout their HIV and ageing journey. We will highlight a gender-transformative approach, recognising that gender norms, roles, and power dynamics profoundly shape the realities of women living with HIV as they age.
Research indicates that women living with HIV may confront exceptional challenges as they age. These include, but are not limited to, accelerated cellular ageing, an increased risk of age-related diseases, and significant psychosocial hurdles such as social isolation, and the dual burden of HIV and age-related stigma and discrimination. Our speakers will explore the physical, cognitive, and social consequences of ageing with HIV, specifically focusing on how these manifest for women.
The webinar panelists will also critically discuss the complexities of menopause transition and post menopause, which can profoundly impact women living with HIV. We will examine how these physiological changes, often compounded by existing gender inequalities, can affect adherence to antiretroviral therapy and overall health outcomes. The intersection of HIV-related and menopausal symptoms remains a largely unexplored territory for many women living with HIV. It is crucial to initiate open dialogues about their specific needs to ensure they receive appropriate medical care and support to effectively manage menopausal symptoms and maintain their overall health and well-being. This discussion will actively challenge the notion that these experiences are solely individual, instead framing them within broader societal and gendered contexts.
While ageing affects women across all geographical borders, women ageing with HIV in USA, Europe and in Eastern Europe and Central Asia (EECA) countries may face significantly distinct experiences and challenges. We will take a deeper look at these regional disparities, seeking to understand and address the specific gendered implications within these contexts.
