Screening for frailty in people with HIV: Practical approaches for providers

Chronological age may not fully capture an individual’s vulnerability to declining health, but aging can trigger or worsen clinical syndromes such as frailty that make older adults susceptible to poor health outcomes. As the number of individuals older than 50 who are living with HIV continues to increase, providers must identify and address changing health care needs throughout their patients’ lifespan to provide optimal care to these individuals.

Kristine Erlandson, M.D., a professor of medicine at the University of Colorado-Anschutz, whose research is focused on the complications of aging in adults with HIV, spoke with TheBodyPro about strategies that providers can use to identify and help patients at risk for frailty.
