The Strategic Review Launch Report, developed following EATG’s Strategic & Governance Retreat in Faro in June 2026, presents the findings and outputs of the first phase of the organisation’s strategic review. It documents the external trends affecting EATG, including shrinking civic space, anti-rights backlash, changing donor priorities, the integration of HIV into broader health systems, healthy ageing, migration, and digital transformation. It also sets out an internal organisational diagnosis, highlighting issues around governance, role clarity, accountability, engagement, communication, and volunteer fatigue. At the same time, the report identifies EATG’s core strengths, including its community legitimacy, scientific and lived-experience expertise, being a long-standing European network, advocacy role and capacity for education and knowledge translation.
The report also captures the strategic directions and questions emerging from Faro. It reaffirms EATG’s core identity around treatment activism, scientific literacy, regulatory expertise, patient involvement in research, education, peer-led empowerment and community legitimacy, while identifying emerging areas such as quality of life, ageing, stigma, migration, Eastern Europe, health technology assessment, patient expertise, AI and community-led research. The report concludes with a roadmap for the next stages of the review: assessing the 2020–2025 strategy, conducting broader consultations, developing and validating strategic recommendations, and consolidating the findings into the next Strategic Framework.
