The European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) released the annual epidemiological report for 2023 for hepatitis B and C.
For 2023, 30 countries in the European Union/European Economic Area (EU/EEA) reported 37 766 cases of hepatitis B virus infection, corresponding to a crude rate of 8.1 cases per 100 000 population. Of all cases, 6.3% were reported as acute, 40.5% as chronic, 46.1% as ‘unknown’ and 7.1% as ‘could not be classified’.
In 2023, 28 622 cases of hepatitis C were reported in 29 EU/EEA countries, corresponding to a crude rate of 7.4 cases per 100 000 population. Of the cases reported, 4.9% were acute, 34.1% chronic, and 53.8% were unknown. Seven percent could not be classified due to an incompatible data format.
