Smoking kills more people with HIV in the U.S. than the virus does, but smoking cessation programs in HIV clinics have had disappointing results, says Jonathan Shuter, M.D. In an interview for TheBodyPro, he argues that we need to shift to more of a harm reduction approach that supports people whether they want to quit or just cut down their intake — and that encompasses lung cancer screening and cardiovascular prevention as well.
Shuter is an infectious disease physician at Montefiore Einstein in the Bronx, New York City, and a professor of medicine at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine. His research focuses on tobacco use in people with HIV, including cessation trials for smokers with HIV in the United States, India, Kenya, and Vietnam.
