Our Stories Built the Movement: Taking Stock of the HIV Long-Term Survivors Summit Outcomes on Survivors Awareness Day

Back to the "News" list

On the occasion of HIV Long-Term Survivors Awareness Day (5 June), we take stock of the outcomes and learnings from the recent HIV Long-Term Survivors Summit in Sitges, Barcelona. The Summit reflected that commitment in action, bringing together survivors and advocates to transform lived experience into collective learning, action and lasting impact.

From 25 to 28 March, 2026, we convened the Long-Term Survivors of HIV Summit in Sitges, Barcelona (Spain), bringing together long-term and lifetime survivors of HIV from Europe, the USA and Canada for a three-day event. The gathering created space for survivors across generations and communities to connect, reflect, and share their experiences of ageing with HIV.

The Summit was an opportunity for people who have lived through decades of the epidemic to learn from one another, discuss ongoing challenges, and help build a shared “Legacy Chest”, a digital audiovisual collection of survivor stories intended to educate, inspire, and support advocacy for years to come.

The Long-Term Survivors of HIV initiative is led collaboratively by the European AIDS Treatment Group (EATG) in partnership with Ribbon –A Center of Excellence (USA), The Reunion Project (USA) and Realize (Canada). Together, we are developing the Legacy Chest and supporting materials as resources that can strengthen communities and inform the HIV response.
