On January 16 and 17, the Research in Europe and Diversity Inclusion (READI) consortium met at the Hospital Universitario La Paz, Madrid, Spain for the official launch of the project. This six-years initiative, supported by a €66.8 million budget—€31.5 million funded by the Innovative Health Initiative Joint Undertaking (IHI JU) and €34.2 million contributed by industry partners—aims to foster a more cohesive and integrated clinical studies ecosystem for underserved and underrepresented (US/UR) communities across Europe.
This pioneering public-private partnership comprises of 73 organizations from 18 countries, including academic institutions, healthcare providers, patient advocacy groups, and industry stakeholders who are leveraging their expertise and leadership to contribute to READI’s mission of fostering inclusive clinical studies across Europe, addressing health disparities, and expanding patient access to innovative treatments.
As a consortium partner, the European AIDS Treatment Group (EATG) plays a pivotal role in the READI project by representing the community’s voice. With over 30 years of patient advocacy experience, EATG will contribute to READI’s mission of creating a cohesive, patient-centered ecosystem for clinical research by identifying and addressing participation barriers (WP1), co-creating tools and training programs to raise awareness and build trust among the general public and US/UR communities (WP4), while also mapping community stakeholder connectivity, needs, and expectations (WP6).
Our expected outcomes for this project includes:
This launch event in Madrid now marks the beginning of a significant endeavour to transform clinical research in Europe, ensuring that it is more representative and impactful for all communities, regardless of background, geographical location, or circumstances. By enhancing the representativeness of US/UR populations in clinical studies, READI seeks to improve research on various disease areas that would lead to better care and more effective treatments across diverse demographic groups within Europe and beyond.
