New estimates suggest infections were responsible for 2.3 million cancer cases worldwide in 2024.

A new analysis by the International Agency for Research on Cancer suggests that infections caused around 12% of all new cancers worldwide in 2024, amounting to roughly 2.3 million cases.

The vast majority of these cancers were caused by Helicobacter pylori, HPV, hepatitis B, Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) and hepatitis C.

More than three quarters of infection-related cancers occurred in low- and middle-income countries, where many people still lack access to effective prevention and treatment.
