19 December 2025 — The board of UNAIDS has agreed to set up a working group to guide the organization’s transition and integration into the wider U.N. system, and address lingering questions about its future as 2025 concludes.

In September, the U.N. secretary-general published a report including a proposal to sunset UNAIDS by the end of 2026. That proposal has received pushback from several countries and over 1,000 NGOs. The situation has also created confusion, with some thinking it means an end to the U.N. response on HIV and AIDS, at a time when it’s still very much needed. Next year is also considered critical to the HIV response: A high-level meeting on HIV and AIDS is scheduled for June, and 2026 is the first year of implementation of the new Global AIDS Strategy, adopted by the board this week.
