If you ask most clinicians to list the incident comorbidities we need to be most diligent about in our patients who are living with both HIV and diabetes, many — if not most — would likely point to cardiovascular concerns first. But an intriguing study out of Sweden offers a different candidate: renal events.
Investigators used a nationwide Swedish registry-based cohort called COSMOHS, which links seven national health and population databases. Data from 312,018 adults newly diagnosed with type 2 diabetes between 2010 and 2019 were analyzed, including 350 people with HIV and 311,668 people without HIV.
