Diabetes risk may be clinically underestimated in menopausal women with HIV. Recently published study results show that women with HIV may experience increased metabolic risks compared to women without HIV, even when they may show a lower degree of visible menopausal weight gain.
The study found that women with HIV experienced faster increases in insulin resistance during menopause than women without HIV, with differences possibly emerging in late perimenopause and becoming statistically significant in menopause.
These findings show that “menopause represents a critical metabolic turning point,” wrote Nicola Abrescia, M.D., in an editorial comment published alongside the study. The study authors stated that their results show that diabetes screening and prevention in midlife women with HIV is “imperative.”
