Dermatological conditions were significant markers for advanced HIV disease in the 1980s and 1990s within the US. Their prominence has greatly lessened in the decades since, thanks to the effectiveness of antiretroviral therapy. However, a recently published longitudinal study concluded that despite the substantial progress in HIV treatment, almost half of people living with HIV in a major urban center have had at least one dermatological diagnosis, including infectious and inflammatory conditions. Even in the modern era, these conditions continue to occur — albeit at considerably reduced rates — and are driven by immune, demographic, structural, and behavioral factors, according to the study authors.
