This month, Steven G. Deeks, M.D., presented early data showing that a single dose of anti-HIV duoCAR-T cellular therapy is safe — and might lead to sustained control of HIV in the absence of any antiretroviral therapy in some individuals. This suggests a different path toward HIV cure that could be scalable, Deeks says. TheBodyPro spoke with him about these new findings and their implications.
Deeks is a professor of medicine at the University of California-San Francisco (UCSF) and the principal investigator of the Delaney AIDS Research Enterprise (DARE), a National Institutes of Health (NIH)-funded international collaboration focused on developing a cure for HIV. He also maintains a primary care clinic for people living with HIV.
