Among young people, age and sexual orientation have significant impacts on sexually transmitted infection (STI) reinfection rates, according to study findings published in Sexually Transmitted Infections.
Researchers conducted exploratory analyses of data from the Safetxt trial to determine whether age and sexual orientation are associated with STI reinfection risk and condom use, or modify the effect of the Safetxt intervention (automated text messages designed to reduce STI reinfection sent over the course of 1 year) on STI reinfection risk and condom use.
Participants from the United Kingdom aged 16 to 24 who owned a phone and were diagnosed with or treated for chlamydia, gonorrhea, or nonspecific urethritis in the previous 2 weeks were eligible for inclusion. Sexuality groups included women-who-have-sex-with-men (WSM), men-who-have-sex-with-women-only (MSW), and men-who-have-sex-with-men (MSM).
