Status of HIV vaccine development: progress and promise

Back to the "HIV and Co-Infections News" list

To mark HIV Vaccine Awareness Day on Sunday, 18 May, the Journal of the International AIDS Society (JIAS) has published a viewpoint titled, “Status of HIV Vaccine Development: Progress and Promise”, authored by Barton F. Haynes, Kevin O. Saunders, Beatrice H. Hahn, Kevin Wiehe, Lindsey R. Baden and George M. Shaw.

Despite the growing options for different HIV prevention methods, an HIV vaccine is still essential to end AIDS as a threat to public health and meaningfully reduce new acquisitions. However, the development of an effective vaccine has faced challenges. With the discovery of broadly neutralizing antibodies (bNAbs), new opportunities for HIV prevention and an HIV vaccine are in sight.

In the viewpoint, the authors present recent advancements made in the HIV vaccine research field by providing a comprehensive summary of trials that have successfully induced immunization with bNAb B cell lineages. While research is ongoing to successfully develop a vaccine that will induce sustained protection from HIV acquisition, the authors highlight that the outcomes of this work will be of great benefit to HIV prevention and beyond.
