Keeping HIV treatment costs down: What can the US learn from the Netherlands?

How can antiretroviral therapy be kept affordable without compromising the quality of care? While the Netherlands has a very different health care system than the one in the United States — including universal health insurance and government price controls—the country’s innovative approaches to cost management offer valuable insights for U.S. health care providers grappling with similar challenges.

TheBodyPro spoke with Piter Oosterhof, Pharm.D., a hospital pharmacist at OLVG in Amsterdam and Ph.D. candidate at Radboud University in the Netherlands whose thesis focuses on tackling financial challenges in HIV care. His research has investigated the use of generic medications, the strategic “de-simplification” of single-tablet regimens, and how shared decision-making with patients can contribute to cost efficiency while maintaining treatment effectiveness.
