Early metabolic risk evaluation and preventive measures at antiretroviral therapy initiation are critical for managing age-related comorbidities in people with HIV.
Among people with HIV, obesity at the start of antiretroviral therapy (ART) may be associated with poorer long-term outcomes, with the association potentially more pronounced among younger adults, according to study findings published in eClinicalMedicine.
Researchers conducted a prospective cohort study using data from the Italian Cohort Naive Antiretrovirals Foundation Study. The analysis included ART-naive adults receiving care across 96 sites in Italy who were enrolled between January 1997 and July 2025. Eligible participants had a BMI greater than 18.5 kg/m² and no history of AIDS, cardiovascular disease, or cancer when they began ART.
