The overwhelming majority of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) cases worldwide can be attributed to hepatitis B virus (HBV) and hepatitis C virus (HCV) infections, according to study results published in Gut.
Liver cancer is the third leading cause of cancer-related mortality. Risk for HCC is increased with chronic HBV and/or HCV infection, heavy alcohol consumption, and metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD).
To quantify the burden of HCC associated with viral hepatitis, investigators updated their prior review, which covered HCC trends between 1989 and 2014, by searching publication databases for studies that reported about HCC trends between 2014 and 2023.
