IAS 2025 preview: Amidst a worldwide funding emergency, HIV science moves forward

The 13th International AIDS Society Conference on HIV Science (IAS 2025) will take place in Kigali, Rwanda, from July 13-17.

While the focus of this biennial meeting is on cutting-edge advances in basic HIV science, prevention, and treatment, IAS 2025 is taking place amid some of the most severe global HIV funding cuts ever seen—largely due to the significant changes in U.S. domestic and foreign funding priorities. The response to this crisis is a core focus of this year’s conference agenda.

The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) has shut down completely, while programs funded by the President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) have been severely constrained.

TheBodyPro spoke to a range of prominent HIV experts and advocates to find out what they were most eager to hear about and discuss with their colleagues at IAS 2025, both in terms of the clinical implications of HIV funding cuts as well as new research with implications for practice.
