The war between Russia and Ukraine grinds on after two and a half years, in what can often seem like a perpetual stalemate. As it does, Ukrainians living with HIV and their allies have made valiant efforts to ensure that their community members stay connected to HIV care.
To learn more about how people living with HIV in Ukraine are navigating the challenges of war, TheBody spoke with Dmytro “Dima” Sherembei, one of the founders of 100% Life, formerly known as the All-Ukrainian Network of People Living With HIV. The group is the largest patient-led organization in Ukraine and—in partnership with the national government, the United States President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR), and the Global Fund—has played a large role in connecting Ukrainians with HIV to their medications and basic care.
To a lesser extent, this includes people with HIV in Russian-occupied regions of Ukraine. The organization also provides food, blankets, medical supplies, and other humanitarian assistance to all Ukrainians, including those living with HIV.
