Statement of the Eurasian Key Populations Coalition (EKPC), 19 September 2024

We, the Eurasian Key Populations Coalition (EKPC), expresses our profound sorrow and deep concern over the tragic killing of transgender woman Kesaria Abramidze in Tbilisi, Georgia (https://www.ekhokavkaza.com/amp/v-tbilisi-ubita-transgendernaya-zhenschina-kesariya-abramidze/33125338.html). This heinous act of gender-based violence highlights the escalating risks that the transgender community, especially in Georgia and the broader region, face on a daily basis.

Kesaria was not only a beloved member of the transgender community but also an outspoken advocate for the rights of marginalized groups. Her murder is a stark reminder of the pressing need for all of us to act in solidarity, ensuring that such brutalities are met with justice and that gender violence is firmly addressed at both national and international levels.

The rising trend of violence, hatred, and discrimination toward transgender individuals in the Eurasian region is alarming. As EKPC, we firmly stand in solidarity with the transgender community, particularly our Georgian colleagues, who have demonstrated immense resilience in the face of adversity. We are deeply committed to amplifying their voices, advocating for their protection, and pushing for the advancement of gender equality and human rights in all aspects of society.

In this tragic moment, we offer our heartfelt condolences to Kesaria Abramidze’s family, friends, and community. We stand with you in demanding justice and meaningful action from the Georgian authorities to address this alarming situation. EKPC will continue to advocate at every level for comprehensive legal protections and the promotion of policies that safeguard the dignity, rights, and well-being of transgender individuals.

Gender-based violence is an affront to the principles of human rights, equality, and justice that we collectively champion. We urge our international partners to join us in condemning this act and in working toward a future where all individuals, regardless of their gender identity, can live freely and safely.

Together, let us reinforce our commitment to protecting transgender rights and fostering an inclusive and respectful society.
