Pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) is at the heart of modern HIV prevention strategies, but what about post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP)? Does it still have a role to play?

At this year’s IDWeek conference (Oct. 16-19), Darrell H.S. Tan, M.D., FRCPC, argued that it does. “PEP is critical part of a comprehensive menu of prevention options,” said Tan, an infectious disease physician at St. Michael’s Hospital in Toronto, during a session devoted to debating key questions in HIV medicine. PEP is unique in being an HIV prevention option that can be used after an exposure event by people who otherwise have no other options. “We need to invest in it because it works and people want it, they just need to know about it,” Tan said.
