A severe dismantling of LGBTQI+ health equity and equality: impact of new US policies on the global response to HIV

To mark International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia and Transphobia (IDAHOBIT), 17 May, the Journal of the International AIDS Society (JIAS) has published a viewpoint, “A severe dismantling of LGBTQI+ health equity and equality: impact of new U.S. policies on the global response to HIV”, authored by Sean Robert Cahill.

Since taking office, the new U.S. administration has enacted policy changes that have dismantled key government agencies that fund global healthcare while systematically reversing policies and programmes that support LGBTQI+ health. The dire consequences of this are already evident worldwide, with the defunding of research on LGBTQI+ health and the rolling back of initiatives promoting HIV prevention and access to care for LGBTQI+ communities.

The viewpoint discusses the impacts of the current U.S. administration’s anti-trans and anti-LGBTQI+ policies on the health of sexual- and gender-minority people, and the resulting threat to HIV prevention and care globally.
