Inclusion of Women and Transgender People in Clinical Trials: Advancing Equity in Research is a thematic meeting, organised as part of the EATG Belong project. The symposium takes place in Barcelona on 5 April (13:40-14:40). This symposium is held in the framework of the 15th International Workshop on Women & HIV organised by Academic Medical Education.

With this meeting we aim to address the systematic underrepresentation or exclusion of cisgender women and transgender people living with HIV from non-HIV clinical trials. Such barriers limit the understanding of how treatments and prevention tools affect these populations and hinder the development of effective, and equitably designed therapeutic solutions. In this session, community advocates and clinical researchers will exchange experiences, discuss challenges, and identify possible solutions to promote greater inclusivity in clinical research for women and transgender people living with HIV in non-HIV and vaccine trials.

The symposium will be moderated by Nicoletta Policek, Executive Director of EATG and will include contributions from:

  • Amanita Calderon-Cifuentes (HIV Research and Advocacy Office TGEU), Beyond Barriers: Addressing the exclusion of trans people in non-HIV clinical trials and their unmet health needs.
  • Beatriz Mothe-Pujadas (Associate Investigator, HIV Unit-Infectious Disease Department IrsiCaixa), Providing insights from a researcher perspective on diversifying clinical trials.
  • Memory Sachikonye (Belong Project Advisor, EATG Member), Discussing advocacy efforts to include underrepresented groups in research and presenting on the Belong project.

The Belong project has been developed by the EATG, and was supported through grants from ViiV Healthcare Europe Ltd. and Novartis. EATG acknowledges that the sponsors had no control or input into the structure or the content of the project. Belong is endorsed by the European AIDS Clinical Society (EACS)
