16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence | Confronting Violence to Claim Our Freedom and Strengthen the HIV Response

Back to the "Blogs" list

As a woman living with HIV, I have seen firsthand how closely violence and HIV are linked.

Global data consistently show that women who experience physical or sexual violence are far more likely to acquire HIV. At the same time, disclosing HIV status or simply being known to live with HIV too often exposes women to rejection, stigma, violence, and abuse. This two-way relationship is not a coincidence; it is rooted in the same inequalities. Addressing violence against women is therefore not separate from HIV prevention and care. It is essential to both.

When we create conditions where women can live free from violence, we also create the conditions for women to protect their health, access treatment, and thrive with HIV.
