Treatment Action Group (TAG) released the latest installment of its 2026 Pipeline Report series on TB Vaccines, written by TB project co-director Mike Frick.

The TB Vaccines Pipeline Report provides the latest information on 14 vaccine candidates under clinical development, highlighting emerging opportunities, evolving clinical programs, and persistent gaps in early-stage development.

Inside the report:

  • M72/AS01E moves closer to a potential breakthrough. The phase III trial is fully enrolled, and the selection of Serum Institute of India as the commercial manufacturer marks a major milestone in vaccine preparedness while bringing important questions about access to the fore.
  • MTBVAC gains momentum. With its phase IIb trial in adolescents and adults fully enrolled, and a phase III trial in infants ongoing, MTBVAC is another leading candidate to watch. MTBVAC’s development also raises important questions about how access planning can proceed alongside clinical development.
  • VPM1002 teaches crucial lessons. Results from two phase III trials published in 2026 underscore the scientific and methodological challenges facing TB vaccine development.

An effective TB vaccine could be transformative in the global response to TB. But scientific progress alone is not enough. Sustained investment, rigorous evaluation, and a focus on affordability, manufacturing, and equitable access are essential to translating promising research into public health impact.

The TB Vaccines Pipeline Report provides an independent, detailed assessment of where TB vaccine research stands, and what the field must focus on next.
