With “Undetectable = Untransmittable,” or U = U, the message is clear: People with HIV who maintain an undetectable viral load on treatment cannot sexually transmit the virus to people without HIV.
The longstanding U = U awareness campaign, which spotlights the effectiveness of modern HIV medications, has roots that go back a decade.
This message, however, is more nuanced when it comes to breastfeeding with HIV.
In an editorial published in The Lancet HIV, experts addressed the application of U = U during breastfeeding as an “urgent research priority,” stating it as “one of the most consequential unanswered questions in HIV prevention.”
