Although HIV infection remains a global public health challenge, ART has transformed it from a fatal illness to a manageable lifetime condition for those who are successfully being treated.
Initially, ART consisted of complex regimens with high daily pill burdens. Today, ART regimens are highly efficacious and well tolerated, consisting mostly of one multidrug pill taken once per day. However, obstacles persist for people living with HIV. Adherence to daily oral ART can be a challenge because of factors such as pill fatigue, mental health issues, substance use disorders, unstable housing and the stigma associated with taking daily pills.
Over the past few years, several long-acting agents have become available, transforming both HIV treatment and prevention.
A column in Healio discusses the long-acting medications currently available, and their role in HIV treatment and pre-exposure prophylaxis.
