PrEP and PEP are now freely available in Malta. Here is some practical information.

  • Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP)

A written PrEP prescription can be obtained following a consultation with a genitourinary specialist.

Once prescribed, the medication can be collected from the following pharmacies:

  • Mater Dei Hospital Pharmacy
  • Gozo General Hospital Pharmacy
  • Floriana Health Centre Pharmacy
  • Paola Health Centre Pharmacy

More information is available here: https://sexualhealth.gov.mt/content/prep

In recent years, PrEP was available privately at an approximate cost of €50.

  • Post-Exposure Prophylaxis (PEP)

PEP is now freely available from Health Centres across Malta. There are currently 10 Health Centres around the island: https://primaryhealthcare.gov.mt/en/health-centers/

In cases of sexual assault, the public is advised to attend the Emergency Department directly.
In cases of occupational exposure, individuals should contact the Infection Control Team.

Further information can be found here: https://sexualhealth.gov.mt/content/pep

In recent years, PEP generally required payment running in the hundreds, although there were exceptions and discretionary arrangements, particularly in cases of sexual assault.
