EATG joins POLITICO Live podcast ‘Severing the chain: How to end HIV transmission in Europe’

Back to the "News" list

On July 5, as part of its podcasts series Severing the chain: How to end HIV transmission in Europe, POLITICO Live will host its first live podcast taping and convene high-level speakers for a frank discussion on how to prevent HIV transmission in Europe. EATG is invited to this panel, represented by Policy and Programme Manager, Ann Isabelle von Lingen.

There’s one key weapon that would be a gamechanger for the fight to end HIV transmission in Europe by 2030 – a cure. Forty years after scientists in Paris identified the virus that caused AIDS, there is still no cure against the virus. Will Europe ever get there? And, if it does, is Europe in a position to take advantage?

Questions to be addressed include:

  • What are the next steps to end HIV in Europe ?
  • What tools already exist to end the epidemic and what needs to be done to use them in the most effective way ? What is going wrong?
  • Gene therapies, stem cell treatments, therapeutic vaccines: where does Europe see the most promising development for a cure?
  • What other innovative treatments are there – and do they negate the need for a cure?
  • Is Europe able to ensure that patients benefit from these medical advances?
  • The international health landscape has changed dramatically since the goal of ending transmission by 2030 was agreed. Is the political will still there?
