HIV & Your Body 2008-2009

A project that aims to faciliate access to HIV treatment and reach PLHA via different media and professionals offering them treatment literacy and treatment preparadness education.

Summary

To help support physicians in the area of HIV and associated co-morbidities (e.g. renal, liver and metabolic syndrome), Gilead Sciences provided an educational grant to develop the HIV & The Body medical educational programme. This initiative has been ongoing since February 2007. Following the success of the programme in educating HIV physicians across Europe and South America, the HIV and the Body International Faculty have proposed establishing a patient education initiative which raises awareness of the co-morbid conditions associated with HIV. The following proposal and terms of reference have been developed by Weber Shandwick – the secretariat for HIV and the Body – in response to the Faculty’s call.

Why

The objectives of HIV and Your Body programme are as follows:

  • Empower patients to see beyond their HIV and take control of the management of their overall health by better understanding the signs and symptoms of co-morbidities and how they can be optimally managed.
  • Educate patients on the expanded role of HIV care providers in managing their illness
  • Increase knowledge and understanding of HIV and co-morbidities amongst a wider group of stakeholders (pharmacists, nurses, patient educators)
