Risk Talk on HIV - insuring the uninsurable - Join the live webcast for the Risk Talk today at 18:00 CET

"We are going to win this fight." President Barack Obama declared on 1 December 2011, World AIDS Day. The prospect of "an Aids-free generation" was unimaginable just a short while ago.

The UNAIDS (Joint United Nations Programme) World AIDS Day report on HIV/AIDS also indicated progress - 50% of people eligible for antiretroviral treatment globally now have access to it and the number of AIDS-related deaths has decreased by 21% since 2005. There is hope.

But the treatments are expensive. Access to health care is an issue for many with HIV. Insurance coverage is important to help people obtain the regular and high quality medical care which is essential to combat HIV. Some insurance markets consider HIV a ‘normal’ chronic disease, but that is the exception and not the rule.

This Risk Talk will focus on the progress on the medical front, but just as importantly the statistics - the facts that establish that HIV is a condition that can increasingly be accommodated within normal insurance products. We will also hear from the patients' point of view of the realities that may keep the promise of an "AIDS free generation" an aspirational goal, rather than a reality for some of the world's population.

The speakers and panellists at the Risk Talk are:

  • Urs Widmer, Senior Medical Officer, Swiss Re
  • Wayne Dam, Senior Products Actuary Life & Health, Swiss Re
  • David Haerry, European AIDS Treatment Group Brussels
  • Caroline Suter, Legal Advisor, Aids-Hilfe Schweiz

The welcome and moderation will be by Rick Perdian, Senior Business Development Manager, Swiss Re.
