HIV 30 years on - the impact on society and the insurance industry

26 - 27 January 2012, event organised by the Swiss Re Insurance Company Ltd. and Aids-Hilfe Schweiz

On 5 June 1981, the Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report, the weekly epidemiological digest for the United States published by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, reported on five previously healthy young gay men in Los Angeles diagnosed with pneumocystis carinii pneumonia. That was the beginning. Thirty years later there have been more than 60 million HIV infections throughout the world, with at least 30 million deaths.

In 2009, 2.6 million people became infected with HIV and 1.8 million died; more than 90 percent of cases occurred in the developing world, two-thirds in sub-Saharan Africa. An estimated 18.4 million women and children were living with HIV. AIDS remains the fourth leading cause of death in low-income countries, according to the World Health Organization.

HIV 30 years on – the impact on society and the insurance industry will address the impact of HIV on society and the re/insurance industry, focusing on:

  • demographic research and modelling
  • the impact on insurance
  • medical advances in the fight against HIV
  • human rights
  • current challenges in Europe
