History

The Aids&Mobility project was founded in 1992 to provide HIV/AIDS prevention, care and support to migrants and mobile communities across Europe. The project was co-funded by the Executive Agency for Health and Consumers (EAHC) at the European Commission, the State of Lower Saxony and Hanover Region and City. The EATG has taken part in the project from the very beginning.

In the early years of the project, A&M built partnerships across Europe and a strong network of professionals and organisations to work together on HIV and migration. A&M hosted meetings and developed activities that for the first time brought together experts on HIV and migration with migrants themselves.

Working together with migrant communities

Capacity building to reduce HIV/AIDS infection risks for migrants

A new model of health education: AIDS & Mobility aims to improve migrants’ health literacy and knowledge of HIV by involving migrants themselves in undertaking research and delivering health training in their own communities.

Information events are being organised in different European cities. The participants will receive a certificate of mediator and will then be able to initiate and conduct their own information events. They will inform their communities in their mother tongue about HIV/AIDS prevention and related topics.

“Young social entrepreneur” – Aids and Mobility benefits from individuals’ enthusiasm and commitment.

Support community ownership, self-help and social entrepreneurship: the mediator training is based on the idea that well-integrated migrants are trained to educate their own community groups in their own language on HIV/AIDS prevention and care issues.

A toolkit with information, curriculum and material is used by the mediators to conduct community group sessions on HIV/AIDS. Aids & Mobility is working with bilingual, open-minded and socially committed migrants.

Network of experts: all partners involved in A&M share knowledge about HIV and migration, build up research and evidence and contribute to the development of a training strategy and respective materials. Aids & Mobility network of experts involves six main European partner NGOs, 18 collaborating partners, Ethno-Medical Centers’ coordinators and a wide group of experts in the field of health and migration, all of them with an extensive expertise in developing training materials for migrant communities. These experts advise the coordinators and partners on the different materials and campaigns developed.

Perspectives

A&M is aiming to consolidate and expand our network, by including more migrant organizations and migrant health experts. Health education needs to strongly reflect socio-cultural issues and is most effective when addressing these determinants appropriately.

Engaging AIDS NGOs, migrants’ NGOs and public services could serve as a platform for concerted action in training and campaign management in more countries. The main outcomes of AIDS & Mobility will be shared by a growing list of partners interested in this approach.

Newsletter and Homepage

The Aids & Mobility quarterly newsletter keeps the community up to date on the project’s work and updates on important events and news in the field of HIV and migration.

The newsletter can also be downloaded in www.aidsmobility.org.

Documentation Center

AIDS & Mobility collects literature and educational materials on HIV/AIDS prevention, care and support for migrants, ethnic minority groups, refugees and other mobile populations. The Documentation Centre of A&M is accessible to a wide audience. It includes a database on literature and a database on educational materials, both accessible through the website www.aidsmobility.org.
